Bringing an ASC Development Project Back on Track

The Challenge

Our team was engaged during the development of a new Ambulatory Surgery Center when it became apparent that the project required additional healthcare specific expertise. The project’s design team had limited experience with the unique regulatory, operational, and facility requirements associated with developing an ASC, creating potential risks to the project timeline, regulatory approvals, and successful opening.

Our Approach

Ambulatory Management stepped in as a development partner, working collaboratively with the ownership group, architect, contractors, and other project professionals. Our team provided ASC-specific guidance throughout the remaining development process, reviewing facility design and clinical workflows, identifying potential regulatory and operational concerns, coordinating corrective actions, and helping ensure that critical requirements were addressed before they became costly delays.

We remained actively involved through the development and pre-opening phases, providing guidance related to regulatory compliance, facility readiness, operational planning, policies and procedures, staffing, equipment, life safety, survey preparation, and other requirements necessary to transition the project from construction to an operational surgery center.

The Result

Through early identification of potential issues, close coordination with the project team, and hands-on regulatory and operational guidance, the project remained on track and successfully progressed through survey inspection with the Department of Health, Accreditation agency and CMS.

The Takeaway

ASC development requires more than completing a construction project. It requires healthcare-specific expertise that connects facility design, clinical operations, life safety, regulatory compliance, and survey readiness from the earliest stages of development through opening day.

When those disciplines are coordinated under one experienced team, potential problems can be identified earlier, costly changes can be minimized, and the path from concept to opening becomes significantly more predictable.
